OSHCstudents – Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is mandatory for international students in Australia, and it provides coverage for a range of medical services. The specific coverage may vary slightly depending on the insurance provider and policy, but here are some common aspects of what is typically not covered by OSHC.
There are several things that are not covered by OSHC, including some things that insurance companies are not allowed to cover, things not covered by Medicare, and some specialist treatments.
OSHC is not allowed to cover:
– Treatment initiated before your arrival in Australia.
– Medical care is required while traveling to or from Australia.
– Costs related to transporting you or your children into or out of Australia.
– Treatment already compensated through a court order, such as for damages or compensation.
– Expenses not covered by Medicare or OSHC.
Furthermore, OSHC doesn’t cover certain items because they are not covered by Medicare.
These include:
– Costs associated with private patient hospital care, like surgery fees and accommodation.
– Dental visits, most dental examinations, and treatments.
– Dentures.
– Expenses for eyeglasses, contact lenses, and visits to optometrists.
– Most physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, eye therapy, chiropractic services, podiatry (foot care), and psychology services.
– Hearing aids and related appliances.
– Acupuncture (unless administered by a doctor).
– Home nursing.
– Long-term care, often referred to as custodial care.
– Medical and hospital expenses incurred while outside of Australia.
– Cosmetic surgery and other non-essential medical and hospital services.
– Medical examinations for purposes like life insurance, superannuation, memberships, or employment.
Moreover, insurance providers do not cover or reimburse for the following:
– Infertility treatments, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF).
– Extras services, which include visits to dentists, physiotherapists, optometrists, or other medical and alternative treatment services.
– Services not covered by Medicare, such as laser eye surgery, cosmetic surgery, or experimental medical procedures.
– Treatment provided outside of Australia.
– Non-essential hospital items, such as purchasing food from the hospital cafeteria.
If you require coverage for any of these items, you can explore other insurance options. For instance, you can acquire a general health insurance policy, often referred to as extra health insurance, in addition to your OSHC coverage. This extra health policy can provide coverage for various medical expenses, including dentist visits, physiotherapy sessions, and optometry services.
