OSHCstudents – When studying in Australia, Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is not just a necessity—it’s a mandatory requirement to ensure international students have access to medical care during their stay. However, there are important conditions attached to this cover, particularly regarding waiting periods for certain services. Let’s dive into what you need to know.
What Are Waiting Periods?
Waiting periods are the set durations that must pass before a policyholder can claim benefits for specific treatments under their
OSHC policy. These waiting periods apply to non-emergency treatments and are crucial to understand to avoid surprises when seeking medical care.
Common Waiting Periods for OSHC Policies
- 12 months for pre-existing conditions: Any illness or condition that existed before the student began their OSHC coverage.
- 12 months for pregnancy-related conditions: Coverage for pregnancy and childbirth will only be available after 12 months.
- 2 months for pre-existing psychiatric conditions: Coverage for any pre-existing mental health conditions begins after a two-month waiting period.
While emergency treatments are covered immediately, it’s important to be aware of these timelines when planning for other types of care.
