OSHCstudents – Your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) must cover the full period of your visa. Your student visa can be granted up to the maximum duration outlined as below.
OSHC is health insurance designed to help international students to cover the costs of medical and hospital treatment international students may need when having accidents or illnesses for your duration in Australia. Your Visa End Date is calculated according to Department of Home Affairs (DHA) OSHC Duration requirements.
Student visa grant period
Student visas are granted in accordance with the expiry date of the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and if relevant, welfare arrangements, up to the maximum periods as outlined below:
Duration of course | Duration of visa |
---|---|
10 months or longer and finishing at the end of the Australian academic year (November–December) | Your visa will usually be granted to March 15 of the following year. |
10 months or longer (finishing January–October) | Your visa will usually be granted for two months longer than the duration of your course. |
Less than 10 months | Your visa will usually be granted for one month longer than the duration of your course. |
A student visa is not usually granted for more than five years.
How to calculate OSHC length?
The student visa requires you to have cover from the day you arrive in Australia, but you will need to buy your cover earlier to help with your student visa application.
OSHC Start date
Your Overseas Student Health Policy start date should be the same day you arrive in Australia. If you’re unsure of your course start date, please choose a date up to 28 days before your course starts.
OSHC End date
Your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) must cover the full period of your visa. Your student visa can be granted up to the maximum duration outlined as below:
Duration of Course: 10 months or less ▶Add to your course end date 1 month
Duration of Course: Over 10 months ending January – October ▶Add to your course end date 2 months
Duration of Course Over: 10 months ending November – December ▶Add to your course end date: Select 15th March of the next year
For example: If your course is from 1 January 2014 to 1 September 2014 (this is under 10 months) then add one month to the course end date.
