What happened?

The student bought an Australian prepaid SIM before flying to Australia, thinking they would be able to use it as soon as the plane landed.
After arriving in Australia, they turned off Flight Mode and immediately tried to activate the SIM. Instead of connecting to the network, an activation error appeared.
They wanted to send a quick message to their family saying they had arrived safely, but they had no mobile data. They also needed internet to check their airport pickup details, open Google Maps and contact their accommodation.
At first, the student panicked because they thought buying a SIM meant it would work right away. Later, they learned that Australian prepaid mobile services usually require identity verification before activation. ACMA explains that telcos must collect customer information and check ID when activating prepaid mobile services.
After clearing airport procedures, the student connected to the airport’s free Wi-Fi, contacted their family, and completed the SIM activation process using their passport details. Melbourne Airport, for example, provides free Wi-Fi in public areas and gate lounges, although it notes the service is not encrypted.
