1. Can I cancel my policy or my plan membership? | If you plan to leave before your study course end date then you should advise the education provider to ensure your insurance complies with immigration requirements. To claim a refund you need to get approval from your education provider to cancel your cover and complete the premium refund form. |
2. If I cancel my Studentsafe policy or membership how is the refund calculated? | The calculation of any refund is dependent on when you cancel and a number of other factors:
a) If cancellation takes place within 14 days of the date of issue and you have not claimed or commenced travel to New Zealand, the premium will be refunded in full. b) For cancellations after 14 days from the date of issue, when you have not claimed or commenced travel, we will retain a proportion of the premium for the period during which Loss of Deposits and Cancellation cover was in force. c) If you cancel after the start date of the policy, your Policy was issued for a period of 90 days or longer and you have not claimed, we will retain the proportion of the premium for the period the Policy was in force and refund any unused premium less 20% for administrative purposes. d) If you cancel after the start date of the Policy and your Policy was issued for a period of less than 90 days, we will retain the unexpired premium for administration purposes. |
3. What happens if I am granted New Zealand permanent residency? | Studentsafe only covers non New Zealand residents who study, and temporarily reside in New Zealand. If you are granted a residence visa or gain New Zealand permanent residency, cover provided under Section 1 Medical of your Studentsafe cover ceases 21 days from the date you gain residency. As a New Zealand citizen you will need to purchase a medical insurance plan from a local heath insurance provider. |
4. Is cover available under the Studentsafe-University or Studentsafe-Tech policy for my wife who is travelling with me? | Cover is available for immediate family members and children 18 years of age and under who are travelling and residing with you. Family members must be enrolled in the insurance on first arrival in New Zealand. |
5. I am a student attending a private language school or educational institute – what do I need to do to obtain insurance cover? | If you are not in one of the Studentsafe group insurance plans you can buy on line an individual Studentsafe –International or a Studentsafe-Pathway policy. For more details on these product please refer to the pages on our menu for more information. |
6. Do I need to arrange additional insurance cover if I am travelling overseas? | If you are planning to study abroad, travel for a holiday to countries not covered under the travel cover provided, or you are doing an elective overseas you will need to purchase top-up cover as this is not covered under your Studentsafe Insurance. You can find out more information about this product on the Offshore menu page. A 15% discount is provided for students who are already insured under the Studentsafe insurance. |
7. I need to return to my home country due to the illness or death of a close relative – what do I do? | The policy provides cover for additional travel expenses, incurred as a result of you having to return to your country of origin during the period of insurance due to the unforeseen death, serious injury or serious sickness of a relative, provided that person is under 76 years of age and the injury or sickness occurred during the period of insurance. In most cases we will require a medical certificate to confirm the condition was not a pre-existing medical condition.

8. If I cause damage to my hostel, home-stay or my flat is this covered under my Studentsafe insurance? | The policy covers you for damage to property if you at fault for the damage caused. This damage should be covered by the properties owners insurance company but if they hold you liable for repair or replacement costs then you can lodge a claim under Section 5 Personal Liability of your policy. |
9. Am I covered when driving my car if I have an accident? | No cover is provided under the Studentsafe policy for damage to your own car or damage caused to any other property while you are driving a car. The policy only provides cover if you have hired a rental vehicle and are charged a rental vehicle excess or waiver by the rental car company. |
