How Does Overseas Student Health Cover Work?

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is a compulsory health insurance product required by international students studying in Australia. OSHC is an insurance product that basically gives international students a level of insurance coverage that is based on the Australian Medicare system.

How and When to Activate OSHC?

To activate insurance, students need to hold a student visa and have arrived in Australia: – If you have just arrived in Australia: you need to activate OSHC at the time you arrive in Australia – If the student is in Australia applying for an visa extension or visa conversion: activate OSHC once granted the student visa Students can activate on website or mobile app

Under what circumstances will OSHC be refunded?

The reasons to get the refund:

1. Get refusal of application for a Student visa

2. You are leaving Australia earlier than expected

3. You no longer hold a student visa

4. You have a simultaneous OSHC policy with another provider

5. Your OSHC policy is longer than your student visa

To cancel your OSHC policy, you’ll need to:

1. Complete the refund form

2. Attach any documentary proof of the reason for the refund, e.g. a letter from the Department of Home Affairs where the visa is denied; a letter from the educational institution, exit stamp in the passport, boarding pass, etc.

What is claim OSHC? How to claim OSHC?

When you get medical treatment outside of the Direct billing system that your insurance company is not affiliated with, you will pay the costs and receive bills from the doctor, then go through the claim procedure (the procedure to apply for a refund) with your insurance provider. Please contact the company to complete the procedure, you can make a claim via the app, via your insurance account, by post, and by email.
