OSHCstudents-Establishing daily rituals can significantly contribute to better mental health. Here are three rituals you can incorporate into your daily routine.
Cultivating a morning routine has consistently been a cornerstone of my personal practice. While my dedication to it may vary at times (blame it on my humanity), mornings remain a sacred period exclusively dedicated to nurturing both heart and mind. Consider the following steps:
– Arrange your space to suit your chosen practice.
– Remove distractions from your surroundings.
– Light a candle to create a conducive atmosphere.
– Optionally, play music to enhance the overall environment.
I always set up my environment before delving into any practice, be it meditation, journaling, or other spiritual endeavors. Each of these acts as a distinct and essential ritual, shaping the tone of my day. Acknowledging the challenges of remote work, optimize the space available to you and exclude any distractions during this dedicated time.
Another favorite of mine and a straightforward yet impactful exercise I often recommend to clients is breathwork. This practice aids in calming the nervous system and alleviating stress. Beyond its utility in preparing for challenging conversations or significant presentations, studies indicate its effectiveness in reducing symptoms associated with insomnia, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and ADD.
Various breathing techniques exist, but a simple one involves inhaling for four counts from the belly, holding for two, and exhaling for four through the mouth. Repeat this for 3-5 cycles or longer until a sense of calm washes over you.
Whether through Google Calendar, Outlook, or another planning tool, carve out time for activities beyond work commitments. Stick to this plan! Organizing and prioritizing personal time alongside professional responsibilities fosters organization and focus, alleviating the anxiety stemming from a seemingly overwhelming to-do list.
